Hey, lovely readers! Noémi Kovács here, back with another heartfelt post from my NoNo Vogue series, where I share pieces of my journey and thoughts about life, art, and personal values. Today, I want to talk about Halloween. And let’s just say—I’m not exactly a fan of the commercial hype that’s taken over this season.
Here’s the thing: Halloween as it is now—filled with costumes, parties, and decorations—has never felt right to me. I know it’s fun for a lot of people, but for me, October 31st and November 1st hold a very different meaning. Instead of plastic pumpkins and candy, this time of year reminds me of those I’ve loved and lost, of the memories and the legacies they left behind.
I grew up in a family that took the first days of November very seriously. We never celebrated it like it was a “holiday” because, for us, it’s a time to remember our loved ones who are no longer here. I’ve lost some of the most important people in my life—my father, my grandparents, my godparents, and so many others who meant the world to me. Their memories live on, not in costumes or decorations, but in my heart and in the traditions we honor.
In fact, my father’s signature is tattooed on my forearm, a constant reminder of his strength, his wisdom, and the amazing way he raised me. Every time I look down, I remember his words, his values, and the way he shaped who I am. For me, this tattoo isn’t just ink; it’s a connection to his memory and everything he stood for.
On November 1st, my family and I head to the cemetery. We light candles, we bring flowers, and we share moments of quiet reflection. It’s our way of showing respect and appreciation for everyone who has been a part of our lives. I think it’s beautiful to take a moment to honor the lives that came before us and to remember all that they gave us.
Halloween might be all about fun and fantasy for some, but for me, this time of year is about real memories and real love. It’s a time to honor my roots, to feel gratitude, and to find comfort in the legacies that live on in my heart.
Thank you for letting me share this with you. Whether you’re lighting a candle or just holding your loved ones close in your heart, I hope you find peace and meaning this season. And hey, that’s what NoNo Vogue is all about—choosing what feels true, and letting that guide us.
Take care, everyone.
